ATSWM Chapter 36.4

Chapter 36.4 Mysterious Woman In Red Gauze

She went to the side room to redo her hair again, and smeared her cheeks with yellow colored flower rouge. Then she changed her clothes and stood in front of the mirror for a moment. Her temperament suddenly changed a lot. She looked so much like a sad married woman.

A Gu is struggling inwardly, wanting to persuade Sang Yuanyuan to not go out and take a risk.

Seeing her coming out of the side room with a new look, he could not help but be struck dumb, and asked somewhat hesitantly, “Are you……Princess Sang? “

Sang Yuanyuan nodded: “It seems that there is no problem. General A Gu, please be sure to take good care of King You. It’s better to leave two people in the room at all times. “

After saying that, she restrained her expression, and instantly became a resentful wife who was betrayed by a prodigal son again.

A Gu: “……” Why does he always have the thought that Lord will be played to death by his wife in the future?

……

Sang Yuanyuan soon found the Drunken Dream of Luan.

It is really eye-catching. On the railing of the second floor, there stood a row of women in colorful gauze, waving their long sleeves towards the travelling merchants passing by downstairs.

All of these women have good looks, and at a glance, one will know that the gauze clothes on them were very expensive.

However, they are not the courtesan in the building, but they are merely small waiters who welcome guests.

One can imagine, that this is a very high class money-squandering den.

Sang Yuanyuan arrived at the door of Drunken Dream of Luan and was blocked. Every day, there are always resentful women who come to look for their husbands. Such a woman will never be let inside.

Sang Yuanyuan lowered her eyebrows and dropped down her eyes, “I’m not here to make trouble. I’m just here to deliver the gold and silver to my husband. He went out in a hurry yesterday and left his purse at home.”

She opened the small bundle in her hand and revealed a piece of dazzling gold.

Seeing the money, an elderly woman came out immediately to greet her. She took Sang Yuanyuan’s arm very affectionately and led her inside.

The woman’s face is clearly coated with thick powder, but the makeup is extremely fitting. At one glance, one will notice that the make-up is of high quality.

The tone is also very elegant.

She said while smiling: “A wife like Young Lady really can’t be found even with the lanterns lit on[1]! And your husband is……”

Sang Yuanyuan pursed her lips: “He is a scholar. When he comes to this place of yours, he should be using an alias. After my parents were gone, my husband was in charge of the property in my family. As a weak woman, I could only rely on him for a living. How dare I ask more questions? “

She looked sad and tolerant. She vividly portrayed a poor woman who has been wrongly married to a bad person, that has been robbed of her family property and still has to be dependent on the whims of others.

The middle-aged courtesan suddenly showed sympathy. Although she had sunk into a profession that was not socially respectable but people’s hearts are always made of flesh. Seeing this appearance of Sang Yuanyuan, she felt that it is not worth it for her, and also felt sad for her.

What makes her feel more rare is that in the face of her fallen self, the other party has not shown the slightest contempt, and she is not disgusted with her touch. She didn’t look down on it for being ‘dirty’.

So the middle-aged woman’s expression became more sincere: “(Younger) Sister, don’t be too sad, I’ll take more care of you and watch him for you in the future. I’ll tell the courtesans below to quietly persuade him to go home and live a good life! If you don’t dislike it, you can call me Feng Niang. “

Sang Yuanyuan, who was readily accepting the good advice, said as her tears fell instantly: “Many thanks, Feng Niang!”

With a soft heart, Feng Niang heaved a sigh and led her into the building.

After taking two steps, she couldn’t help but be talkative and persuaded: “Actually, us, women don’t necessarily have to rely on men to live. Be more cruel to ourselves and we can always find a way out. Some men are unreliable!”

The ‘stubborn in her own belief’ Sang Yuanyuan, shook her head sadly.

Feng Niang also felt it was not good for her to keep persuading, so she can only sigh quietly.

The two then entered the pavilion.

This money-squandering den in Imperial Capital is indeed really extraordinary. The golden pillars and jade columns are decorated with high-class cloud silk gauze. The pot of the bonsai is made from glazed jade. Each and every blooming flower is tender and beautiful, and there was nothing that wasn’t exquisite.

There is a beautiful woman playing the Qin[2] on the jade stage that was flooded with light. An iceberg-like beauty that makes people think that they have entered into some elegant palace by mistake.

Feng Niang led Sang Yuanyuan to go around downstairs, but did not find the person she was looking for.

[1] can’t be found even with the lanterns lit on : hard to come by, rare.

[2] Qin : a seven-stringed plucked instrument in some ways similar to the zither

TN : do you guys prefer I use the direct translated idiom (such as this ‘can’t be found even with the lanterns lit on’) and put the meaning at footnote, or just the meaning ‘rare’? Sometimes there were funny, meaningful and beautiful idioms in Chinese, and at that time I always feel ’what a pity if I just typed -rare-’. But any suggestions are welcomed ^_^

I honestly love the idioms, it’s one of the top reasons I read cnovels. I pass the funniest/most moving ones on to friends and family. So IMO a literal translation with maybe a footnote for explanation is perfect.

If I didn’t want cultural exchange, I’d be reading any of the millions upon millions of books written in my native tongue.
It’s to the point that I’ve actually dropped translations in favor of pursing through the raws with MTL and Chinese to English dictionaries when I find a translation that seems too sanitized.

I also prefer the idiom, I think it’s one of things which make reading CN novels great. It makes me think deeply too, which is kinda good for me, bcoz it makes me use my brain (i rarely use it •́ ‿ ,•̀)
This chapter reminded me that SY was an actress in her past life. lol (iirc? coz i might be mixing up novels again *sweats*)
